There is a lot to do, and it is easy to forget all the tasks required for a successful harvest. However, if you are reading this, you are in luck as the tips below will make garden preparation a breeze. Also, we welcome you to leave your thoughts and tricks below. Now let’s get into it with These Easy Ways to Prepare your Garden for Spring.

1. Take Stock

Take stock of what worked and what did not work the previous year. You want to double down on the seeds and tactics that worked while avoiding the pitfalls.

We recommend working with a gardening journal. If you do not have one, it is time you get one.

A journal allows you to keep track of new plants, successful harvests, watering and fertilization schedules, and tips you picked up along the way.

2. Inspect your Garden

Now, it is time to inspect your garden. Winter weather can play havoc with our gardening infrastructure. You want to ensure that your planters, fences, and pipes are in proper working condition.

Repair what needs to be repaired and replace what needs to be replaced.

While inspecting your garden, you should check your perennials. Remove any damaged part, say dead twigs and branches.

Finally, clean and repair your tools. This process involves sharpening and adding oil to prevent corrosion. Winter is also a great time to invest in new tools thanks to the off-season prices.

3. Remove Weeds

Weeding cleans up space where the plants will grow. But you have to it right, to get better results.

First, your hands are not the best tools for removing weeds, as you can’t remove the weeds entirely with your hands. You end up ripping the weed, but the roots remain in place and the weed will grow again.

For a tidy garden, get the right tools, a pair of gloves, and a bucket. Go after the roots, and all vegetation. Put the weeds in the bucket to catch all the seeds.

Yes, weeding is digging. It is also best you water the soil to loosen it before getting down to work.

4. Re-energize the Soil

Next, you need to prepare the soil. Owing to winter, the ground is often compacted, and it needs to be loosened up. A spade or a tiller are the best tools, we also recommend working your soils up to 14-inches deep.

While the dead leaves and mulch will be mixed with the soil, you should get rid of the fresh ones.

If the soil is poor, add compost to improve the texture, nutrient content, and water retention. If you plan on growing plants that need nitrogen, chicken poop is full of it and can be mixed into your soil.

5. Prepare new Beds

Next, it is time to prepare new beds. Don’t be tempted to order more plants than you have space for.

Once you build the garden beds, order plants just enough for the available space.

6. Divide Perennials

There are some plants you can give more vigor to by dividing them up. Plants such as Shasta daisies and hostas. Start by digging around the perimeter of the plant. Dig widely so as not to damage the roots.

Next, dig and lift the root ball. If it is too large, you should divide it while still in the soil and lift the separated piece.

Untangle the roots and replant them right away.

One more tip, remember to exercise patience. Gardening is an exercise in patience and can be a meditative experience. Don’t let Mother Nature fool you with the few spring-like days in February and March. Pay close attention to your frost dates, and only plant once they are over.

The tips above will give you stellar results, do let us know if you feel there is something we missed. And remember to have fun while you Prepare your Garden for Spring!
